Sleep Aids & You
Sleep supplements can be a helpful tool for artists & djs who struggle with sleep due to irregular schedules or time zone changes. However, they should be used strategically and responsibly.
Melatonin
Melatonin is used as a supplement to normalize abnormal sleep patterns and it works by decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep, improving sleep quality, and increasing sleep duration. Short-term use of Melatonin has not been shown to negatively affect the natural production of Melatonin after discontinuation of use.
When to Use: Consider supplements for short-term use during periods of jet lag, high stress, or disrupted routines.
Dosage: Start with a low dose (0.5-3 mg) to avoid grogginess. Consult a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate amount.
Timing: Take melatonin 30-60 minutes before bedtime for optimal effects.
Cautions: Prolonged use or high doses may interfere with your body’s natural melatonin production. Use supplements as a temporary aid, not a long-term solution.
L-Tryptophan
L-Tryptophan is involved in the synthesis of proteins. It's a precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin. L-tryptophan is also used to help treat insomnia, sleep apnea, depression, and anxiety.
Valerian Root
Valerian is the worldʼs most popular Traditional Herbal sleep remedy. Valerian root has a history of widespread use in North America and Europe since the mid-1800s for the treatment of restlessness, insomnia and nervous sleep disturbances, and has been called the "valium of the 19th Century.
Ashwaganda
A 2021 study showed that Ashwaganda:
Reduced sleep onset latency: Falling asleep took less time.
Increased sleep efficiency: Participants spent more time in restful sleep.
Improved total sleep time: The overall duration of sleep was enhanced.
Decreased wake after sleep onset: Participants had less time awake after initially falling asleep.
GABA
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid, also known as GABA, is a non-essential amino acid that acts as a chemical messenger in the human brain. It regulates brain and nerve cell activity by inhibiting the number of neurons firing in the brain, thus acting as the brain's natural calming agent. GABA helps promote relaxation and ease nervous tension by inhibiting over-stimulation of the brain.
Passion Flower
Passionflower has effects similar to anxiety medications and can help with relaxation, mood, sleep, and pain relief.
L-Theanine
A naturally occurring, non-protein amino acid that is primarily found in green tea. Theanine acts as a glutamic acid analog that promotes relaxation by reducing stress and anxiety levels. It is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and increases alpha waves, which are associated with a more relaxed mental state.
ZMA (Zinc, Magnesium & Vitamin B6)
Zinc: Zinc is a key mineral that promotes restful, uninterrupted sleep. It has calming and antidepressant effects, helping to regulate sleep patterns. Additionally, zinc has been shown to enhance dream vividness, making it a natural sleep aid.
Magnesium: Magnesium supports muscle function, energy production, and electrolyte balance, and is especially important for those who exercise regularly. It helps replenish minerals lost through sweat and physical stress, while also promoting better sleep and relaxation.
Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 enhances the absorption of zinc and magnesium, helping to improve the effectiveness of the supplement. It also supports neurotransmitter production, which can help with relaxation and deeper sleep
When supplementing, follow the recommended dosage on the label and consult a healthcare professional if you have health conditions, are pregnant or nursing, or take medications.
